Dental veneers are very durable. In fact, with proper care, they often last for a decade or longer. In some cases, they even endure for well over 20 years! Still, there is always the slight possibility that one of your veneers could fall off. What should you do if that ever happens to you? This blog post provides practical instructions that will help you get your smile back on track.
Find the Veneer and Call Your Dentist
If possible, locate your veneer and store it securely, perhaps in a small plastic case or a resealable bag. Saving it is important because there is a chance that it can be reattached to your tooth. Then, call your dentist. Although a failed veneer is not an urgent dental emergency, they will still try to schedule you for an appointment as soon as possible. They can also give you tips to care for your oral health in the meantime.
Be Careful with Your Tooth
In all likelihood, a bit of enamel was removed from your tooth before your dentist placed the veneer. Because the veneer is no longer in place, you might find that your tooth is extra-sensitive to stimuli and has a rough texture. Because of that, it would be best to eat foods that are not too hot, cold, acidic, or spicy. A mild, soft diet will minimize discomfort.
You should also be sure to keep up with a thorough oral hygiene routine while you are waiting for your dental appointment.
Do Not Attempt a DIY Repair
Some people have mistakenly thought they could reattach their veneer on their own with superglue or other materials. That is not a good idea. Such items are not designed for use in the mouth, so they are unlikely to hold your veneer in place for very long. Plus, they usually contain toxic chemicals that should never be ingested.
If you would like to cover your exposed tooth to increase your comfort, you can place some orthodontic wax over it.
See Your Dentist
When you visit your dentist, they will strive to determine why your veneer fell off. From there, they will recommend your next steps.
- If your veneer fell off because the bonding agent failed, your dentist might simply reattach the veneer.
- If the veneer was old, you might need to replace it with an entirely new one.
- If the veneer fell off due to decay or other dental problems, you will need restorative care before you can get a new veneer or other cosmetic treatments.
After a new veneer is in place, your dental team may coach you on how you can keep it where it belongs as long as possible. Then, you can go and enjoy your refreshed smile!
